Farm News of the Week

Aha! Rabbits was founded by Mark and Kimberly Ferguson in 2014 in Rockvale, TN. We raise our rabbits in cages up off the ground, and produce between 100 and 150 fryer rabbits per month. We feed Tucker Milling pellets, which provides all the nutrition they need. We use no antibiotics or medications. We keep their cages clean and have a manure management program that ensures the air they breathe is fresh and free of ammonia. We utilize large fans to keep them cool.

Because rabbits breed and grow so quickly, one doe can produce 320 pounds of meat per year. It often only takes 3 months from birth to butcher.

We have found several ways to further process the manure, as well as to sell it as compost. Red Wiggler Worms and Black Soldier Flies help break it down as well.

100% of domestic raised rabbits are white meat! No more fighting over who gets the ‘breast!

Rabbit meat is not only lean and nutritious, but it’s also tasty. Some people liken it to chicken, others to veal.

Rabbits will produce 6 pounds of meat on the same feed and water as a cow will produce 1 pound of meat.

Amy from Solace Farm sends the following message:
Okay, I’ve done some work on my pages, there’s a few new items as well as some more pics where there weren’t any…

I have added several new soaps, including an Orange Creamsicle-scented version of the Classic Lard and Coconut, and some great molded goat milk bars. I’ve also added a smaller size of all-natural sheep wool pillow, a great size for a child or travel pillow.

Our Chinese Red Noodle yard-long beans have started coming in, so look for those! These are a beautiful burgundy that doesn’t fade with cooking like most purple beans. The taste is not quite the same as regular green beans, they are also called asparagus beans.

We are currently planting for fall, so keep watching for the new crop of carrots, beets, and a variety of greens over the next few months!

(L to R) Bulk Garlic CNG, Fig Leaves, Small Natural Sheep Wool Pillow, Deodorant.

Flying S Farms in Woodbury has added ‘Jade’ Stringless Beans, and Erdmann Farm has added “Yaya” Carrots.

Farm News of the Week

We will miss Knottynuffacres this week, but Deb plans to return to the market next week.

Frontier Family Farm has listed Bok Choy, “Homestead” Garlic, Red Onions, and Red Potatoes; in addition to several varieties of lettuce.

Erdmann Farm has returned to the market, and has added Burgundy Okra, “Marketmore 76” Cucumbers, “Anaheim” and “Islander” Peppers.

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse is still awash in color, and your perennial garden can be colorful in August too! Carefully consider sequence of bloom when you select new plants. Try adding a couple of these to make the sunny areas colorful in late summer: Carnations, Coneflowers, and Gauras, all of which will bloom all summer; also Daylilies, Pincushion Flower, and Tradescantia, all of which bloom earlier in the season and then return for an August encore.

For the shady areas, you might try some of these beauties: Species begonias, Toad Lily, and Plumbago, all to be accented with various shades of colorful foliage of Coral Bells and Hosta. We also have some very nice late-blooming azalea bushes which are not listed on the market. If you’re interested in these, please drop me an email at tnhomeschooler@yahoo.com .

Still waiting their turn to bloom are the Anemones, Asters, and Sedums. All are spectacular in an early fall garden.

If you haven’t tried some of these beauties, you owe it to your perennial garden to add a few now! All are available on the market from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse. Late summer is a fine time to transplant flowering perennials, if you are diligent to keep them well-watered during our traditionally drier August.

(Clockwise from upper left) Gaura, Hardy Begonia Species, Coral Bells, Dwarf Red Carnation.

Farm News of the Week

We are sorry to report that Erdmann Farm products will not be available this week. John plans to return to the market next week.

From Amy at Solace Farm:
This week, the theme is Habaneros! I’ve added 2 kinds of Habanero Hot Sauce, a Mango-Habanero BBQ Sauce, and a Peach-Mango Habanero Jam. They’re all delicious, of course, (although the BBQ is just plain amazing!) with a range of heat from just a bit spicy all the way to liquid fire!
And don’t forget about our green (and yellow and purple) beans. This cooler weather has given them a second wind, and the vines are loaded again.

(Clockwise from upper left) Peach-Mango Habanero Jam; Mango Habanero BBQ Sauce; Carrot-Habanero Hot Sauce; Carrot-Habanero Hot Sauce, Caribbean Style.

From Andra at Sow’s Ear Piggery:
We are very happy to share some new cuts with our latest pork order. I need more time to sort through the total order in terms of number and weight of cuts, so this week we are offering a limited quantity of these new items: tenderized pork cutlet (great for chicken-fried pork or pork parmigiana; cubed shoulder (for stew or kabobs); and thick-cut pork chops (with or without extra fat cap). We also have ground pork (versatile cut for burgers, meatlballs, or in a sauce over pasta); mild and spicy breakfast sausage (great on nachos too!); and pork shoulder for smoked, pulled BBQ. As always, our products are from pasture-raised pigs, non-GMO, never fed antibiotics animal by-products, or growth supplements.

(Clockwise from upper left) Tenderized Pork Cutlet, Cubed Pork Shoulder, Ground Pork, Thick Cut Pork Chops.

Flying S Farms has added some jams and jellies.

(L to R) Peach Jam, Green Garlic

Native Fare has added some new vegetables in place of some that are finished. Don’t forget to order their yummy blueberries, available both fresh and as a Fresh Blueberry Crumble Pie!

(Top) Kennebac NEW Potatoes, Duke & Northland Highbush Blueberries.
(2nd row) Blueberry Crumble Pie, Fresh Basil.
(3rd row) Skiitake Mushrooms, Zinnias in a Mason Jar.
(Bottom) Oyster Mushrooms, Goat’s Milk Fudge.

Wayne Diller added White Fingerling Potatoes.

Is your garden looking a little tired & drab? Does it need some colorful perennials? Dogwood Valley Greenhouse plants are available all year round, unlike the box stores. And I pay special attention to sequence of bloom when I add new plants to the market. Right now I have several in bloom, including the “old reliable” carnations, which have bloomed all summer. These garden carnations have shorter stems and smaller blooms than the florist types, but they bloom prolifically, and their scent is heavenly! I have restocked several types of Coneflowers, and although these plants are young and small, they have been blooming very nicely for most of the summer. Some of the reblooming daylilies, as well as Pincushion Flower and Tradescantia, are back in bloom after a short rest. The gauras aren’t prolific bloomers, but their delicate dancing flowers will continue all summer till frost. The less common Species begonias are just coming into bloom now in the shady greenhouse. These are native to this area, but I cannot tell whether they are true perennials, or whether their prolific self-seeding is the reason I have them every year. I also currently have Toad Lily and Plumbago in bloom, more shade-lovers whose blooms are sure signs of shortening daylength. Coral bells are also very colorful in the late summer shadey garden, with bright foliage color choices between lime green and burgundy, some with striking markings. Still waiting their turn to bloom are the Anemones, Asters, and Sedums. If you haven’t tried some of these beauties, you owe it to your perennial garden to add a few now!

(Clockwise from upper left) Pincushion Flower, Tradescantia, Plumbago (Leadwort).

Hello friends and neighbors! We are offering our garden overflow to you beginning this week from Native Fare Farms in Pelham, TN. We grow with no chemicals and utilize old and new sustainable methods to raise the best possible produce, dairy, and eggs for ourselves. Our twin sons are going off to college this fall and Riley (future dentist), is supplementing his income by picking these fresh fruits and veggies just for you nice folks! I’ve even taught him how to make a tasty blueberry crumble pie so he can use up the abundant crop of highbush blueberries ripening now! Please feel free to look around on our website for recipes and snatch up some tasty vegetables from the market before the summer heat takes them out!

Our special on thyme plants for your garden continues. Buy any three thyme plants, receive a fourth one of your choice free. Order the three plants that you want, and add a comment telling me which additional one you want for free.

(Top) Bradley, Celebrity, & Early Girl Tomatoes.
(Bottom) English, Silver-edged, & Lime Thymes.

Time to Order Fresh Local Farm Products!

Good morning!

The market is open as usual, and will remain open for your orders till Tuesday at 10 pm.

Summer has officially arrived, and the 4th of July is right around the corner. Plan ahead this week for the perfect meal to celebrate Independence Day.The beauty of the Locally Grown movement is that you know who is picking your farm products, where they’re grown or raised, and by whom! Did you know that by ordering on the locallygrown market, you are virtually assured of receiving the “cream of the crop” from each farmer? You will receive the best products picked and made with pride especially for YOU! You can’t get any fresher and higher quality than that! Thank you for supporting your local farmers and small businessmen and women.

Please be sure to read the section of the page entitled “Important Ordering and Pickup Information.”

The farmers and market managers would really appreciate your efforts to help spread the word about our fantastic market. What a great local resource for fresh, local farm products. Please pick up a few business cards to hand out to your friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Advertising is very expensive, and we want to use our slim market funds in a responsible manner.

Farm News of the Week

Triple B Farm is back this week. Check out our Crusader Coffee, roasted locally in Coffee County the week of delivery! 10% of all profits from our coffee sales goes to “A Soldier’s Child” foundation, a Tennessee charity to benefit the families of our fallen warriors. Not only are you getting the best coffee around, but you are giving to a cause right here at home. Also check out our herbs and teas. All the flowers and herbs in our teas were grown in our garden without chemical bug spray and chemical fertilizer.

From Deb at Knottynuffacres:
My grandson arrived safely and is doing well. I hope to be home in another week or so.
I hope those who have bought my artisan bread loaves have enjoyed them. I plan to make a plain variety and also add rolls. I do plan to bring extra loaves to sell on market days. I may even bring a junior farmer with me.

From Nicole at Smirk Ice Cream:
Happy Sunday everyone! We hope you enjoyed your samples of Smirk Ice Cream on Thursday! We’d like to let you know that Smirk Fruit Sweetened Almond Milk Ice Cream is the only fruit sweetened almond milk ice cream anywhere, in fact, we are currently patent pending on our product. We will be shipping our ice cream nationwide starting next month, but everyone that orders through the Manchester Farmer’s Market can eliminate the expense of shipping by allowing us to deliver to you through this great venue! We hope you will give us a try and let us know what you think of our ice cream. Feel free to follow us on Facebook and/or email us at info@smirkicecream.com and check out our website at www.smirkicecream.com. Thanks again!

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse has recently added several new items and brought back some old favorites. New on the market this week is Lemongrass, so useful in Asian cuisine. Lavender, Greek Oregano, Sage, and Basil also rejoin the herb plant lineup this week. There is no need to buy dried and bottled herbs from the grocery when you can get just about any herb fresh-cut on Thursday morning from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse.

The tall red Carnations are beginning a second bloom cycle, soon to be followed by the dwarf reds and several shades of pink within the next week or two. When they get back into full bloom, I will once again offer the “Garden in a Vase.” We have just one very special large Flame Violet hanging basket, whose beautiful bronze foliage and bright orange-red blooms would be perfect on your porch or patio this summer. And we have one very large beautiful “Hanging Herb Garden,” containing parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme, a wonderful gift for any chef or baker. The dwarf red reblooming daylily is also looking really good this week, although it’s in limited supply, and the tall double orange daylily will join it by the end of the weekend.

All the houseplants and out-of-bloom perennials are still available as well. Check my list and find something for that problem area or empty place in the garden. With over a hundred plants to select from, you’re sure to find that perfect one. And I’m always available by email if you have any problems or questions.

(L to R): Garden (“Common”) Sage, Hanging Herb Garden.
