Good morning!

This is just a friendly reminder to place your order online by 10 pm this evening.

It seems as though every week, someone says, “I meant to order last week, but forgot till about 9:45.” Well, that’s fine, for two reasons:

1. Every single order placed before I close the market will be filled, unless the farmers run out of some items; and

2. I never close the market at 10:00 sharp. It just doesn’t happen (and to those who know me, that comes as no surprise.) It may be closer to midnight before it gets turned off. However, it’s better not to put off ordering, because some items may be sold out.

Lastly, remember to hit that last “submit” button. I really dislike disappointing a customer who comes to market, only to find no order in their name because they didn’t hit the last button. When your order is placed, you will receive an email confirmation. If for any reason you fail to receive this confirmation, please contact Linda as soon as you realize it’s missing.

Also please go to our Facebook page & like, comment, and share this week’s post. Facebook isn’t allowing me to post on multiple sites, or post multiple photos. So please help us spread the word. Surveys indicate that word of mouth is the most effective form of advertisement. Please help us advertise our fantastic growing market!

See you on Thursday!

Farm News of the Week

Native Fare Farm returns this week with their fabulous summer vegetables. They have added the following to our market:

(L to R): Green Bush Beans “Contender”; “Great American” Green Cabbage; Radishes “Cherry Belle”.
Sweet Corn “Peaches and Cream”; Japanese Cucumber; New Potatoes “Kennebac”.
Cauliflower “Snow Globe”; Spaghetti Winter Squash; Curly Kale.

Native Fare has also added a few other products:

(L to R): “Duke & Northland” Highbush Blueberries; “Firestone” Peaches; Multi-color, Cage-free Eggs.
Fresh basil; Baby goats: Lamancha buckling and doeling; Hummingbird (Cypress) Vine.

From Amy Rae at Solace Farm:

I am excited to announce that I have ventured (successfully!) into the realm of liquid soap making! I have 4 options of a liquid version of my Classic Lard soap available on the market, and I will be adding a liquid 100% coconut oil soap soon as well. I have versions of the liquid lard soap for both the standard pump dispensers and the foaming dispensers, in scented and unscented. I am currently packaging this soap as a refill for your existing dispenser bottle, so it comes in a re-purposed plastic bottle – if you are interested in a dispenser bottle as well, let me know, I have some amber glass bottles with quality metal pump dispensers available.

(L to R): Foaming Soap; and creamy soap without and with fragrance.

From Linda at Dogwood Valley Greenhouse:

Please look through the perennials to see all the exciting ways to brighten up your garden! It is not too late to plant, and several types are still in bloom at this time. But you must be sure to keep them (as well as your spring plantings) well watered during this excessive summer heat.

I have been able to find a few new varieties to add to the listings from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse. Some of them include:
Coneflower – not just in pinks anymore! I now have a white one and a nice orange.
Blackberry Lily – not really a lily, but actually a little iris, is a summer charmer
Daylilies – I love the little bicolor orange & red, as well as several with red throats or markings. Unfortunately they are out of bloom now, but their photos give you a good idea of their colors so you can add now and enjoy next summer.

And for your herb garden, I have a few new offerings:

Large basil container – a one gallon pot containing 2 green and 2 purple basil plants, ready to harvest and enjoy this evening!
Elderberry bush – berries may have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anticancer properties.
I have also made available several of the “old favorites” from last year, such as Greek oregano and various thymes and mints.

Lastly, the “fresh-cuts” are now available in limited quantities. Why buy fresh-cut herbs from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse?
1. All “fresh-cut herbs” are just that – cut the morning of market day, before the weather is too hot, increasing the flavor.
2. I discard the larger stems. Hence you get a lot more usable leaves and tender shoots than you might find elsewhere.
3. My herbs are organically grown, although I do not list them as “organic” because of the expenses involved with the certification process.
4. I never spray my herbs with any pesticide stronger than Insecticidal Soap, and that only very sparingly. You’re not eating chemicals. Hence you should be sure to wash your herbs before use, in case there might be a six-legged hitchhiker in the bag.

(Top, L to R): Coneflowers in several colors; Hen & Chickens.
(2nd Row, L to R): Blackberry Lily; Daylilies in several colors; Basil Container.
(3rd Row, L to R): Greek Oregano; Thymes and Mints in several flavors.
(Bottom, L to R): Several fresh-cut herbs (Emglish thyme, lavender, Orange mint).

Farm News of the Week

Some recent vegetable additions from Flying S Farms include:

(L to R)
(Top) Small Broccoli Heads; Pickling Cucumbers; and Onions “Candy.”
(Middle) Squashes “Flying Saucer,” “Straight Neck,” and “Sunburst.” (Bottom) Squashes “White Scallop” and “Zephyr.”

Frontier Family Farm has added blueberries and green beans. They will sell out fast, so get yours soon!

Triple T Farms has added Grass-fed Brisket.

Solace Farm Homestead has a variety of animals – chickens, geese, turkeys, ducks, Scottish Highland cattle, goats, alpacas, sheep, a miniature horse, bees, dogs and cats. We do virtually everything by hand here, from growing corn to grinding it into cornflour, spinning yarn, tanning goatskin, butchering goats, splitting firewood, making pasta, laundry soap, granola, etc. We are dedicated to meeting as much of our own needs as possible, then providing excess to our local customers.

Our farm is located on a reclaimed stripmine, gardening in raised beds made with reclaimed cinder blocks and filled with leaf mulch, old hay, compost, and a variety of manures. We are Certified Naturally Grown, and therefore follow all organic guidelines. For bug control, we utilize the poultry as much as possible as well as garlic and Neem oil sprays and hand-picking. We have a large unheated hoophouse for winter growing, enabling us to have greens, carrots, beets, etc. most or all of the year. We share our strawberries and garlic on the market, as well as herbs year-round. I often have other produce.

We currently have around 40 duck hens and a few drakes, as well as Scottish Highland beef available most of the year. We never use any hormones, and only use antibiotics in medical situations. We never feed grain – only grass, hay and mineral supplements, with a protein supplement in winter.

We also have alpacas, and I do all the processing of raw fleece and spinning of yarn myself.

I also make lotion bars, body butters, and deodorants, and soaps both vegetable-oil based and goat’s milk, in both scented and unscented varieties. I source my supplies from reliable sources, and buy organic as much as possible.

If you prefer to utilize this service, please place an order for it, same as other products, selecting your delivery area. Don’t forget to give us your location address in the comments section of the order. Also please text Linda at (931) 273-9708 for specific arrangements.

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible. Please encourage our local farmers by helping to spread the word about our wonderful market to everyone you know. We offer a great variety of local farm products, and our items will be in your hands in time to plan for the weekend. Wonderful local products are available for ordering from the comfort of your own computer.

More new farmers are considering joining our market, if they can expect enough sales to help pay their transportation costs. Please help us grow the market by sharing this e-mail with your friends and inviting them to give us a try. And if you haven’t ordered from Manchester Locally Grown for a while, please check out our wide variety of offerings this week. Also please let us know if we can improve our selection or scheduling in any way to better suit your needs.

Blessings,
Linda & Michael
