Time to Order Fresh Local Farm Products!

Good morning!

The market is open as usual, and will remain open for your orders till Tuesday at 10 pm. Please be sure to read the section of the page entitled “Important Ordering and Pickup Information.”

Farm News of the Week

From Amy Rae of Solace Farm:
We have restocked our Scottish Highland grassfed beef, and have added both a few new cuts like NY Strip and Filet Mignon, and more of the classics such as stew meat (first to sell out), ground, and chuck roasts.

I have also added a loose tea blend – made from our own fig leaves and wildcrafted sumac berries, it is a caffeine-free stand-in for a lemon green tea. I love this with just a touch of honey!

We have a new item in the soap line-up – laundry soap! I’ve been using this myself for years now, and decided to make it available here as well. It is made from my own soap, with just a few additional ingredients, and we love how simple it is! I’ve also listed a lavender pumice scrub for the kitchen and bathroom, again with my own soap, and pumice powder. If you like the Mrs. Meyers surface scrub (like I do) this is for you!

(Clockwise from top left): Loose Tea, Laundry Soap, Pumice Scrub, Whipped Body Butter.

From Elaine at Weaver Farms:

We are running a special for the month of March: 5 pounds of Angus ground beef for $25. Pasture and grain fed. No hormones, antibiotics or MSG. No water added. USDA inspected.

Linda at Dogwood Valley Greenhouse writes:
This crazy weather has finished off the daffodils, sadly, but that just means that the greenhouses at Dogwood Valley Greenhouse are coming alive, with the early spring things beginning to bloom. Your garden will delight in the addition of some color to welcome spring very early each year. And can the herbs be far behind? We also have some really nice hanging baskets available, which will need to stay indoors till end of April. Watch the “Live Plants” category, as new plants will be made available each week. Since these are listings from previous years being made available again for this season, they will not show up in “What’s New” at the top of the page.

(L-R) Dwarf Coreopsis, Phlox stolonifera.

Farm News of the Week

Our three blends are roasted special for the quality flavor and freshness any coffee lover desires. Delivered to us within 48 hours of roasting!

When you purchase any blend of Crusader Coffee, not only are you getting locally roasted, fresh coffee, you’re supporting your local economy and a cause worthy of all Americans. 10% of all profit from Crusader Coffee goes directly to A Soldiers Child foundation, founded and located in Smyrna, TN. From Amy at Solace Farms:
We are picking up the next batch of grass-fed Scottish Highland beef this week! To clear the freezers, we are running a special on beef roasts this week only – 20% off all shoulder, rump, and round roasts! Spring is coming soon, but there will still be a few more chilly days, just perfectly suited to a hearty stew, chili, pot roast, or crockpot meal.

And from Pam at Macks’ Mushrooms:
Look at these huge Shiitake mushrooms that Corey and Mack are growing on the farm. These are very delicious mushrooms. We eat them often in our omelets and in dishes we make. Fresh mushrooms are so much tastier than canned mushrooms.

Good evening!

Here is an announcement that I missed this morning:

Sow’s Ear Piggery offers three new products this week: Ground Pork and Hot and Mild Breakfast Pork Sausage, in packages weighing between 1.4 and 1.5 pounds. $7.75 each. From free-range pigs, fed non-GMO feed and vegetables, no antibiotics, hormones, or additives.

Now an administrative note. I must apologize for the formatting on the newsletter. This week’s edition is particularly bad, but a couple of other recent ones weren’t much better. If the formatting mess-ups are causing problems for you, please let me know. My son says that the CSS in the program won’t allow me to do the things I want to do (namely, two column format and other details). But I just take this as a challenge, i.e., the impossible just takes a little longer. So we’ll see what next week’s looks like. If you don’t like it, though, please let me know so I will stop playing.

Blessings,
Linda

FARM NEWS OF THE WEEK

Flying S Farm has added Delicious Bran Muffins to our baked goods selections.

From Amy Rae of Solace Farm:
Homemade pasta is back! I’ve listed some of the classic Fettuccine, and I’ve added Elbow macaroni. Tri-color elbow and fettuccine – with kale and pumpkin – are coming soon! All my pasta is made with half whole wheat flour, half white flour, and our own duck eggs – the colored pastas have our own Solace Farm kale or winter squashes, dried and powdered. If you haven’t had homemade egg pasta, you really should treat yourself – it’s a different thing altogether than the store-bought flour-and-water stuff.

Also, we are still clearing our freezers for the next installment of grass-fed Scottish Highland beef, coming this next week, so this week we are having a special on cubed steaks, $2 off each package. The classic recipe for these tenderized cuts is chicken-fried steak, but they’re also great for Swiss steak, cheese steak sandwiches, and a number of recipes for braising or crockpot cooking.

Garlic-Basil Jelly; Elbow Macaroni.

Debbie Wittig of Knottynuffacres is back from her trip and has turned her market products back on. Welcome back, Debbie!</p

Linda from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse sends this message:
With really warm weather (is it really still mid-February?) moving in this week, the daffodils may not last much longer. Normally they bloom for three weeks, but this year, we may only get two. If you’d like a bouquet, I suggest you order it this week.

Wayne Diller has added several dozen pullet eggs to the market.

From Molly Cornelison of Kountry Vittles Baked Goods:
Everyone seems to be in the mood for a nice refreshing bite of spring so I have added my Fresh Strawberry Pie and my Ultimate Strawberry Cake to the market. My kitchen was busy this past week as I filled over a dozen orders of these highly popular scrumptious deserts. As if the pictures aren’t mouth watering enough you just wait till you get a bite of one of these. Delicious!

Ultimate Strawberry Cake, Fresh Strawberry Pie.

FARM NEWS OF THE WEEK

Debbie Wittig of Knottynuffacres is still traveling, and her products are unavailable to the market this week. We hope to see her soon.

Weaver Farms has a new supply of all pork and beef products. Home raised, no antibodies or hormones, family farm, USDA inspected.

Pork shoulder roast, ham slice.

Spring is almost here! The daffodils are in glorious bloom at Dogwood Valley Greenhouse in Hillsboro! Brighten your dining table or bedroom with one dozen beautiful long-stemmed garden-fresh blooms, in a pretty vase tied with a bow. Flowers have white petals and yellow centers, and are very fragrant, my garden favorite for many years. This bouquet is perfect for gift-giving to someone special or to yourself.

The late winter-flowering perennials are also beginning to bloom in the greenhouse. Look for weekly additions to the market under “Live Plants”.

Daffodil Bouquet, Helebore – Lenten Rose

FARMS OF THE WEEK

Kountry Vittles Baked Goods is celebrating their 2nd Anniversary this Week, thank you everyone for you Support. I’ve been busy baking lots of cakes, pies and goodies and will be adding more to the list shortly. This past week the most popular item has been my Banana Pudding Pie with it’s Nilla wafer crust and ole fashioned homemade pudding mixed with lots of banana slices and more Nilla wafers inside. It’s topped off with a generous portion of Meringue and baked to perfection. Next runner up has been the Ole fashioned Coconut Cream Pie topped with Real Whipped Cream. Just can’t beat those ole Timey recipes. Back to baking everyone have a Blessed Day.
Molly

My work travel schedule has prevented listing of Sow’s Ear Piggery premium pork products for a few weeks. We’re back on the market this week and hope to make up for the absence with special pricing across the board. All of our products are listed below $4/pound this week. With the return of winter weather, pork is a versatile entrée for comfort food prepared indoors on chilly January nights. Braised, baked, pan fried, or in stroganoff or goulash, pork from the oven hits the spot!
Thanks!
Andra

Note: Our pigs are raised outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine, graze clover and native grasses, forage on acorns and persimmons in season, and are also fed non-corn, non-soy, non-GMO feed (pellets of milo, black oil sunflower seed, and wheat) and fresh fruit and vegetables. They are happy, docile, friendly animals who enjoy a good life and re-pay us in natural, non-antibiotic, non-hormone meat and lard for frying and baking. Our pork is nicely marbled and sweet flavored.
