Deodorant - Clay, Bulgarian LavenderGrower: Solace Farm
Price: $10.00 ( 3.3 oz tube )Available (Exact): 12
Scented with pure lavender essential oil, simple yet classic.
These paperboard tubes actually hold noticeably more than the standard tubes (3.3 oz vs. 2.5), and look smaller to boot with a more compact shape. I love that these are completely recyclable or compostable, including the paper label I apply. These tubes simply push up from the bottom – it may take a bit of effort to get the contents sliding, but holding it for a minute first to warm it can help.
My recipe is based on much research, and then trial-and-error tweaking, resulting in a formula that contains: Shea butter, beeswax, almond, castor & coconut oils, cocoa butter, arrowroot powder, kaolin & bentonite clays, and essential oils for both fragrance and, more importantly, anti-bacterial/anti-microbial power. This formula is the perfect balance of firmness (beeswax), meltable/glide-on-ness (oils), moisturizing (butters) and function (arrowroot & clay powders) – and there are no harmful ingredients - technically, you could ingest it and it wouldn't do any harm! I do not use any baking soda - my research found that many people are allergic to/irritated by the soda in natural deodorants, resulting in rashes. It appears that often users develop a sensitivity to the baking soda with continued use, so I have avoided it in all my deodorants, and use arrowroot starch instead.

Eggs - Duck 1 dozenGrower: Solace Farm
Price: $7.50 ( 1 dozen )Available (Exact): 0
View RecipesEggs are one of the most economical and nutritious proteins out there.
You can feed a family on a few dollars, literally. Compare the cost of a frittata with burgers or steak, or a roast chicken!
These are very large (jumbo-sized) white and occasionally green-tinted eggs from our mixed flock of Khaki Campbells and Golden Cascades. These ducks are free-range, roaming the yard and wherever they feel like, really. They do get traditional layer feed overnight but only have access to our yard, pastures, and pond all day long. These eggs have deep orange yolks and thick whites that will show you why they’re called “whites” (and make chicken egg whites look eerily yellow). I don't think there is any difference in taste, but I do think there is a noticable difference in texture - the duck eggs have firmer whites and very rich yolks, I like them much better than chicken eggs.
Duck eggs are the best for baking, giving extra loft and lightness to cakes, meringues, etc. They also make fluffier scrambled eggs and omelettes as well, and are superb hard-boiled.
Note: it is possible to have an allergy to duck eggs due to the difference in their protein, which generally manifests as anything from slight nausea to stomach-bug-type symptoms. HOWEVER - on the other hand, if someone has an “egg allergy” it is most likely only to chicken eggs and NOT to duck eggs, and quite possibly they can actually eat eggs as long as they are duck! I find it frustrating and sad that such potentially life-changing information is so little-known.

Price: $3.30 ( 12 eggs. )Available (Estimated): 9
Our quail are spoiled on a diet of high-protein layer feed, mealworms, fresh greens, and even watermelon rind.
Their eggs may be blue or speckled as we have Celadon quail and project quail in a variety of colors. Any texture (nubs or bumps) on the eggs are calcium deposits. Quail eggs can be slightly more difficult to break open than chicken eggs and we use a scissor specifically made for it.
Quail eggs are highly nutritious, creamier and smoother than chicken eggs. In recipes, please substitute 2 to 3 quail eggs for 1 chicken egg. Some of our jumbo birds lay “large for quail” eggs.
Eggs are unwashed.

Elderberry BushGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $7.00 ( each gallon pot )Available (Exact): 5
Dug this spring from a grove in my yard and potted in gallon pots. These are first-year plants, still small, and may not bloom next year.
This native shrub, American Elder or Sambucus canadensis, has been known for its delicious fruit (for use in jellies, pies or wine) since native American times. It has more recently been used in landscapes for its spectacular blossoms and dramatically colored berries. The Elderberry is also a fantastic wildlife habitat, providing both shelter for small animals and a healthy food source. Elderberries are both drought and cold-tolerant, adapt to almost any soil type and most drainage conditions and have few pests. They grow 6 to 12 feet high in an oval or rounded shape. The white flower clusters are generally 6 to 10 inches in diameter and are very showy with a nice fragrance. The fruit, which is pleasantly tart but high in vitamin C, is a smooth round berry measuring three-sixteenths-inch in diameter growing in broad flat clusters.

Fern Plant - Giant Japanese PaintedGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $8.00 ( Gallon pot )Available (Estimated): 3
Giant Japanese Fern is thought to be a result of a cross between a typical Athyrium nipponicum pictum, Japanese Painted Fern, and its cousin the lady fern (Athyrium filix-femina). A very unique and rewarding hardy fern, this delightful selection performs well in any rich, evenly moist soil. It forms a massive, arching 3 feet tall clump of silvery fronds with green highlights on dark purple stems. Terrific for edging the shade border, in the rock garden, or in containers. Deciduous. Leaves may be trimmed to the ground in late fall or early spring. Plants are easily divided in spring, every 3 to 4 years. As with all athyriums, deer-resistance is excellent.

Fern Plant - Japanese Painted (smaller, more burgundy than Painted)Grower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $8.00 ( trade gallon pot )Available (Estimated): 3
This lovely fern grows around 12-18" tall and slowly multiplies to form a large clump 24" across. The fronds are approximately 18" long and are a soft-grey metallic color with hints of red and blue. The center stem is red so the contrast is excellent. This variety has more burgundy color at all seasons than the other one I offer.
This fern prefers partial rather than deep shade. It is an excellent contrast plant to other shade perennials, such as Hosta, bleeding hearts, columbines, astilbe, and heuchera.

Fern Plant - OstrichGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $8.00 ( Gallon pot )Available (Exact): 2
Ostrich fern is popular for its erect stature and graceful arching fronds (leaves) resembling huge ostrich feathers, up to 5 feet long and 3 feet wide. Each frond is cut into numerous leaflets and subleaflets. As they mature they spread at the tip, creating a lovely canopy effect.
Ostrich fern is very easy to grow in a variety of light exposures, but prefers shade or partial shade. It colonizes fairly fast by spreading rhizomes, eventually forming large, glorious colonies, but rarely becomes invasive. Ostrich fern grows best in moist, rich soil conditions but tolerates occasional drought when established. It's excellent around a pond or in a damp border. Few plants impart such a light, airy, cooling effect in the landscape, or provide such a range of foliage textures for the garden, as Ostrich fern.
Fiddleheads are edible, and this is the preferred species to eat. However, it should only be eaten in moderation as all ferns contain varying amounts of carcinogenic compounds.
The plant is not evergreen, but the fertile fronds turn black and persist through the winter.
They perform better and better with age. Do not plant too deep; set the crowns at or just below soil level. A year-round mulch is recommended. Zones 2-7, and native south to Virginia and Missouri.

Flowers, Dried - CalendulaGrower: Valley View Farm and Garden
Price: $5.00 ( .25 oz container )Available (Estimated): 1
The flower petals of the calendula plant (Calendula officinalis), or pot marigold, have been used for medicinal purposes since at least the 12th century. Calendula is native to Mediterranean countries but is now grown as an ornamental plant throughout the world. However, it is not the same as the annual marigold plant that is often grown in gardens.
Calendula has high amounts of flavonoids, plant-based antioxidants that protect cells from being damaged by unstable molecules called free radicals. Calendula appears to fight inflammation, viruses, and bacteria.
Traditionally, calendula has been used to treat stomach upset and ulcers, as well as relieve menstrual cramps, but there is no scientific evidence that calendula works for these problems. Today, calendula is often used topically, meaning it is applied to the skin.
Calendula has been shown to help wounds heal faster, possibly by increasing blood flow and oxygen to the affected area, which helps the body grow new tissue. It is also used to improve skin hydration and firmness. The dried petals of the calendula plant are used in tinctures, ointments, and washes to treat burns, bruises, and cuts, as well as the minor infections they cause. Calendula also has been shown to help prevent dermatitis or skin inflammation in people with breast cancer during radiation therapy.
