Seeds - Mexican SunflowerGrower: Cheryls Neighborhood Garden
Price: $5.00 ( .50 gram )Available (Exact): 2
Mexican Sunflowers:
If planting these seeds for your own flowers; after the last frost, strew them in a cleared area of dirt; tamp or press them into the dirt, cover them with just a lite sprinkling of soil. approx. 1/8th inch.
I have had an abundance of the sunflowers in my garden for late summer. I saved the pods and let them air dry, then pulled out the seeds. The Mexican Sunflowers are an annual flower. They will be packaged in a small zip lock bag with a label on them.
I plant them in potting soil in March or April and let the seeds sprout. I use the plastic containers that you buy cherry tomato's in or strawberries. I call them my mini-greenhouse, being kept warm and the soil moist.
When the sprouts have a few true leaves, they should have roots. Then I transplant them into the garden when the weather has warmed to above 60-70 degrees. The plants grow to 5 or 6 feet. Deadhead the spent blooms and save seed for next year, or give them to the compost fairy.
Happy Planting

Shasta Daisy PlantGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $8.50 ( Gallon pot )Available (Estimated): 1
Shasta Daisies are all-time favorites for the perennial border. The cheery flowers begin to appear in late spring and continue on for several months if faithfully deadheaded. Shastas mix so effortlessly with other perennials that no garden should be without them! This is a plant that is easily grown in average, well-drained soils in full sun. It's a good cut flower, attracts butterflies, is suitable for dried flowers, and serves as a butterfly nectar sources. In spring, remove all dead foliage; and cut back to basal foliage in fall. Cuttings can be done in summer; and division can be done in the spring and is recommended every 2-3 years. Fertilize with Holly-tone or a water soluble fertilizer as recommended.

Spice Mix - Cajun Blend, 2 ozGrower: Solace Farm
Price: $10.00 ( 2 oz )Available (Estimated): 7
This is a mix of our own garlic powder, “onion” powder (Elephant garlic powder, very sweet and mild), chili and Serrano pepper powders, basil, thyme, and oregano. Also includes purchased sea salt, smoked paprika, and black pepper.
This spice mix is the classic Cajun seasoning, and the only difference between this and chili seasoning is that chili mix has cumin. Rather than blending both, I’m just offering this version and you can add cumin to taste for making chili. Also, this spice blend plus a touch of your preferred sweetener is a great mesquite-type BBQ spice. I used it recently on roasted chickpeas and it would also be fantastic on chicken, lamb, beef or most any meat, potato or sweet potato wedges, and any number of other dishes. Packaged as 1 oz in a snack-size ziploc bag.

Tomato Plant - Big BeefGrower: Valley View Farm and Garden
Price: $3.00 ( each )Available (Exact): 40
For years gardeners wanted a large, beefsteak-type tomato that was delicious, early to bear, and highly disease resistant. Finally in 1994 those wishes came true with Big Beef. The large fruit has old-time tomato flavor and the vines are resistant to many of the problems that can discourage gardeners. The fruit is borne on vigorous, indeterminate vines from summer until frost. Compared to other beefsteak types, Big Beef is early and will set fruit reliably even in cool, wet weather. We harvest dozens of tomatoes from each plant in our Alabama test garden, where the harvest season lasts two full months and the growing conditions are very good. It grows well throughout the country, earning it an All America Selections designation in 1994; it has since grown to be a national favorite. Vines grow long, so give the plant the support of a tall cage or stake.

This popular beefsteak-sized, Amish tomato produces rosy pink fruits loaded with an old-fashioned tomato taste that has been prized for decades. It is considered one of the benchmarks for intense tomato flavor. The indeterminate vines are vigorous, so use tall cages. Vines yield tomatoes that ripen gradually until frost. Plants have "potato leaf" foliage. The tangy taste of Brandywine is a gourmet cook's delight.

Tomato Plant - Brandywine RedGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $3.00 ( quart pot )Available (Estimated): 4
The Red Brandywine tomato plant is a Pennsylvania Amish heirloom dating to 1885, with large potato-leaved foliage. It bears large scarlet beefsteak-shaped fruit, popularly considered among the best tasting available. Even when fully ripe, the tomato can have green shoulders near the stem.
Brandywine tomatoes can bear fruit up to 1.5 lbs (0.7 kg), requiring 80 to 100 days to reach maturity, making it among the slowest maturing varieties of common tomato cultivars. Brandywine has been described as having a "great tomatoey flavor", (others have called it a beautifully sweet tomato that is offset by a wonderful acidity), leading to heavy usage despite the original cultivar's relatively low yield per plant.
