Throughout the late fall and winter months, we won’t find a lot of new items on the market. Most of them right now are seasonal offerings: holiday turkey from Wayne Diller, wreaths and kissing balls from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse.

We do, however, have a lot of items that would make great stocking stuffers or gifts. And we will be glad to put together for you a smaller gift basket. Gift certificates also available. Just let us know what we can do for you!

Sow’s Ear Piggery has added a scrumptious sampler of three of her most popular cuts of pork. And as of this writing, we are working on finding a few good recipes to go with this offering.

Merriwether Bakes has some new baked goods on the market this week.

I’ve been busy cleaning up and repairing the high tunnels, in preparation for the colder weather headed our way. Have you seen an all-black wooly bear? He foretells a cold, bleak winter ahead. But as a result of all this outside busy-ness, my business of newsletter prep has suffered. Sorry. I’m sure I’ve missed some new items this week, as well as returning ones. I like to sell perennials in bloom in spring and summer for instant color in your garden, but fall really is the very best time to plant container-grown perennials, shrubs, or trees. Their root systems suffer very little transplant shock, compared to field-grown plant materials. Planting in September or October allows their root system to keep growing all winter in our climate. Maintenance, especially watering, is much easier, with cooler temperatures in fall, and they will have better drought resistance next spring and summer. For this reason, I have made some of my more popular perennials available now, even though they aren’t in bloom in this season. These include the astilbes, dwarf crested iris, woodland phloxes, candytuft, dwarf coreopsis, and shasta daisy this week, with a few more to come. My late season bloomers will bring fall color to your garden, including the fall reblooming azaleas, beautiful tall gauras, very unusual toadlily, and taller sedum. I have a huge selection of ferns and hostas ready to plant now in your shade garden, and you can get your whole herb garden planted this fall from my collection. Order soon, as some of these plants are in short supply at this time of year. I have a few nice young hanging baskets which will do a good job of replacing your tired old spring baskets to brighten the house this winter. Lastly, my beautiful Christmas decorations will soon be available for pre-order, including a new smaller size of natural decorated wreath. October orders will be the first ones filled in early December.

Merriwether Bakes, Arrows and Shoots, and Triple T Cattle Farms are all on vacation this week, planning to return next week.

Valley View Farm & Garden has lots of pumpkins available. Decorate with them. Carve one and enter it in the contest at the Farmers’ Market of Tullahoma on Oct 31. Or make one into a pie. However you use it, you know you need a pumpkin!

Country Road Homestead still has some pumpkins of less common varieties: heirloom, Sugar Pie, white, and Artie’s Award-Winning bread.

Sow’s Ear Piggery has new pork products, including ribs, petite loin roasts, Kielbasa, bratwursts, and Italian sausage. These items join the usual products available, such as ground pork, chops, cutlets, stew meat, and breakfast sausage. From non-GMO, no-corn, no-soy, free-range pigs.
