Good morning!

Just a very quick note:

Thanksgiving falls on our normal delivery day, of course – so we are going to move everything ONE DAY EARLIER this week.

The announcement that the market is open will arrive SATURDAY morning. Normally this is the “newsletter”, but this week I expect there won’t be much news. I will be very busy all day Friday, so it will be a skeleton letter, but it will remind you that the market is open for ordering.

The market will close on MONDAY at 10 pm. Please try to place your order early so you don’t forget.

Pickup will be on WEDNESDAY between 4:00 and 5:30 at the normal location.

I (Linda) will have company from California on Tuesday and Wednesday, and may not see you at market. If not, I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration. We have so much to be thankful for! And I’m very thankful for each of you!

Blessings,
Linda

Farm News of the Week

Molly Cornelison of Kountry Vittles sends this message:
Good Fall morning Folks, I’ve been a bit quiet from ya’ll for a couple of months. I apologize for that, life has a way of getting hectic at times. I am now back to my simple kitchen and my simple baking routine, and Good Lord willing it shall stay that way. I have added a lot of new items to the market place this week, preparing for the upcoming holidays. Check out the fudges I have added, listed in the bakery section under Candy. My personal favorite is my Chocolate Fudge with coconut, while my son’s favorite is my Peanut Butter Fudge. I have added Buckeyes and my personal favorite Martha Washingtons. Oh those creamy coconut balls with walnuts are addictive. With the holidays come parties and gift giving. These items make the perfect take-along addition to the company party or family get together, or even a gift for that one person you have no idea what to get. Some of my new additions do not have pictures quite yet, but those are coming soon I promise (just have to grab camera before they are all eaten. lol).

(L to R, top): Buckeyes, Pecan Pie Cheesecake Fudge.
(middle): Butter Pecan Fudge, Oreo Balls. (bottom): Customizable Cupcakes, and Pumpkin Roll, available with or without nuts.

This message is from Linda Reed:

Wreaths – on 16" base, measuring around 22-24" diameter – retail $27, pre-sale 10% discount = $24

These Christmas decorations are all handmade by me, from all natural materials gathered from my property or the local Christmas tree farm, except for the bright red berries and ribbons. All will be in limited quantities, but pre-sale orders will be guaranteed.

Farm News of the Week

Welcome to our market Fiery Fungi from Pelham, TN! Katelin Hawkins writes:

We are a gourmet edible mushroom farm located in Pelham, TN. We are committed to providing fresh, delicious mushrooms to our customers. We strive to provide a good variety all year round. We do not use any pesticides in our grow rooms, and are organic in all but certification.

Katelin has added several mushroom products to the market:

(Top L to R): Shiitake, Blue Oyster, and Lion’s Mane Mushrooms.
(Bottom L to R): Yellow Oyster and Chestnut Mushrooms, and Grow-Your-Own Shiitake Block.

We’re glad to have Terra Hills Natural Products from Hillsboro, TN, returning after a lengthy break. Many of her natural products contain magnesium, which is insufficient in our modern diet. Magnesium assists nearly all our bodily functions, including muscles, nerves, and dignestion. Terresa says:
Terra Hills = from the hills of the earth
Using nature to maintain health & wellness. All natural products for you & your family!

(Clockwise from upper left): Lavender Magnesium Body Butter, ‘Soothing Scents’ Vapor Rub, Magnesium Oil Spray with Lavender, Bathroom Cleaner.

Stock up this week on vegetables from Erdmann Farm. John will probably still have peppers, radishes, and Long Island Cheese pumpkins. He will then be traveling and unable to list on the market for the next two weeks.

(L to R): Peppers “Islander”, Long Island Cheese Pumpkin, Radishes “Champion”.

Andra Martens from Sow’s Ear Piggery sends this message:
With cooler, damp weather, this time of year is perfect for rendering lard in a low-temperature oven that warms your kitchen for hours. This week, we have for sale limited quantities of both back fat and leaf lard. Render low and slow in a covered baking pan, cool, then pour into Mason jars to set. The jars can be stored in the fridge for months. We personally use rendered back fat daily in place of oils or butter, as well as for baking cornbread or muffins. Leaf lard is the internal fat that is prized for baking. If rendered slowly, as not to burn the fat, it finishes pure white. Do not fear the negative propaganda about lard. All our pork products are from non-GMO, non-antibiotic, non-animal-by-product, pastured pigs. Their meat and fat is the purest you will find, and more healthful than store-bought commercial pork. “You are what you eat,” so choose the best!

Back fat and Leaf Lard.

Maypop (Passion Fruit) & Crab Apple Jellies.

Farm News of the Week

Triple T Cattle Farms from Bedford/Coffee Counties has joined the market. Scott Tidwell writes:

We are a family owned and operated cattle farm, raising grass fed beef. We do not use any hormones or antibiotics in the raising of our animals. The cattle are only given necessary medications (similar to us getting inoculations) to maintain the health of the animal and overall health of the herd. The farm is worked by 3 generations of Tidwell’s, with the added benefit of teaching the younger generation where their food comes from. We maintain a herd of approximately 75.

There are numerous studies that show the many benefits of grass fed beef. One of the greatest benefits is the lower amount of fat contained in grass fed beef. Grass fed beef is lower in saturated fats and higher in Omega 3 fatty acids. This makes grass fed beef a valuable part of a heart healthy diet. We also do not use any growth hormones or antibiotics in the raising of our animals.

This week Triple T has listed several cuts of grass-fed beef.

(Top L to R): Chuck Roast, Ground Beef, New York Strip Steak, Liver.
(Middle L to R): Ribeye Steak, Round Roast, Rump Roast, Shoulder Roast.
(Bottom L to R): Sirloin Steak, Sirloin Tip, Stew Meat, T-Bone Steak.

This message is from Nicole Sanborn:
Hello Manchester Market members! With great regret we need to inform you that Smirk Ice Cream will no longer be available through the Manchester Farmer’s Market after this week. We have enjoyed our time on the market, are incredibly grateful to our loyal customers and look forward to being able to serve you through other means in the future. Please place your final orders for delivery this week and then you can visit www.smirkicecream.com to find out how to purchase your favorite fruit sweetened ice cream from then on.

Thank you again and good luck to each of you!

Tracey Burks writes:
Botanical Harmony Farm has added a few of their very popular Goat Milk Soaps. Plant-based oils and butters, Palm Oil free and the majority of oils and butters are organic. Only Essential Oils for scent and natural colorants such as plant roots, leaves/flowers and clays.
the Himalayan Salt bars are wonderful for that slight exfoliation and added minerals for our skin. The soap lathers beautifully, both are incredibly creamy and formulated for face, body and even hair! We didn’t find a need for a separate shampoo bar because these work great!

THIS WEEK: 3 bars for $15! Save $3! Just add scents in the comment section of your order

We also have our organic sugar scrubs ON SALE! Regular price- $10, get yours for $8.50 with a variety of essential-oil scents to choose from! Great for skin polishing, face washing or shaving legs! Organic sunflower oil is perfect for all skin types!

We also added some beautiful feather bundles in the Holiday Decorations section that can be used anytime for crafts, décor and more!

Thank you for supporting our family farm business! We appreciate you so very much!

(Clockwise from upper left): Goat Milk Soap Coffee Scrub, Goat Milk Soap Activated Charcoal & Himalayan Sea Salt, Organic Sugar Scrub, Feather Bundles.

Erdmann Farm is on vacation mode for a couple more weeks. When I get back, I should have radishes and pumpkins in addition to the peppers I’ve had.

Knottynuff Acres is on vacation mode this week, but will return next week.

Solace Farm has added several varieties of lard soap to the market, and will add some tallow balms by tomorrow. Amy says:
“Old-fashioned” lard soap, but with a bit of coconut oil for better lather and moisturizing. I use local lard that I render myself. While lard soap often has a reputation for being harsh or rough on skin, that is largely because many years ago, lye was not consistently refined, and people didn’t use precision measurements. Today, with 100% pure lye and my digital scale, lard makes a beautiful white soap, very hard and long-lasting, with good cleaning power, while being very gentle and great for skin. These bars are 4 oz each, ingredients simply lard, coconut oil, lye, and water, with fragrances added for some great scents. I know this is an unusually low price compared to most handmade soap, but I want to offer a soap that is economical for everyday use, and since it is 3/4 free local lard, my input costs are very low (other than the days spent rendering lard of course!). I try to live as locally as possible, and I want to help make that an option for others as well.

Classic Lard Soaps (Clockwise from top left): Coffee Scrub, Orange Creamsicle, Lavender, and Sandalwood & Tobacco.

Natural & Old-Fashioned Operation at Casey Family Farm
Here at the Casey Family Farm we’re checking into certifying our cows as A2 cows. Our cows are all Guernsey and Jersey, with the Guernsey genes comprising about 75% of our herd. Approximately 90% of all Guernsey cows are A2 animals. We plan to test and certify our animals in the near future to verify that our milk is indeed A2 milk! A2 milk is a genetically superior milk which has been naturally preserved in select cows which did not go through a genetic mutation which occurred in cows many, many years ago. Most milk sold today( well over 90%) comes from Holstein cows which have the mutation or A1 milk. For more information on A2 milk, you can go to https://a2milk.com/faq/

We do feed grain to our milk cows in the milking parlor. However, our herd has year round access to hay and pasture ( when available), so we can honestly say that our herd derives a majority of its nutrition from grass. We try very hard here at the Casey Family Farm to keep our farming operation as “natural and old-fashioned” as possible. We like to say that our motto is" where old-fashioned milk is still in fashion!"

What’s New at Solace Farm?

A quiet corner of our operations here at Solace Farm that is often overlooked is our alpaca herd. We really love these sweet, timid animals, both for their gentle nature and their fantastic wool. Alpaca fleece is many times warmer than sheep wool, lanolin-free so hypoallergenic, and non-itchy. What more could you ask for in a wool?! Non-shrinking? Well, it comes in that too – there are 2 varieties of alpacas, the Huacaya which is fuzzy like sheep, and the Suri that has long, shimmery locks more like hair – and Suri wool doesn’t shrink in hot water! We currently have 12 Huacaya alpacas, and 1 Suri – about the proportions for the US in general. One of our Huacaya is our newest baby, Tanya, born this summer. We’re expecting one more this fall, Reba is keeping us in suspense – they have an 11.5 month gestation give or take a few weeks, and they really don’t show a pregnancy at all, so they really build the suspense!

Alpacas can be difficult to keep healthy, they are susceptible to vitamin deficiencies as well as meningeal worms, a parasite that attacks the brain. Raising a healthy herd can be a challenge, but we’ve learned so much over the 7 years we’ve had them, and have found a management style that works for both us and them – and it’s worth it when we wear our luxurious sweaters, hats and mittens or see those sweet babies! We welcome visitors, so if you’d like to see these beautiful animals firsthand just contact me to set up a visit.

Below is baby Tanya. Visit our website www.SolaceFarmHomestead.com for occasional blog posts and pictures.

Natasha Brooks of Triple B Farms writes:
Just a few notes from Triple B Farms/Crusader Coffee/Pickleweed Sweet Treats.

Grace, who makes the delicious sweets, is going to take a break from the market. She is in her senior year of high school and wants to focus on school. She would like to thank everyone that has bought her treats and to let you all know she will be back possibly later in the year.

Triple B Farms has added a few new items just in time for early Christmas shopping! Check out the handmade section or the seasonal section.

Crusader Coffee is roasted in Coffee County on Coffee Street! Crusader Coffee is roasted specifically for Templar Shooting Sports in Tullahoma on 1101 S. Jackson Street. We have three blends specially roasted for the quality, flavor, and freshness all coffee lovers want. We also have K-cups that come with an adapter for your Keurig.* If you have purchased k-cups from us and they are not working in your coffee maker, send me an email and I can bring you an adapter*. 10% of all profit from Crusader Coffee goes directly to A Soldiers Child foundation, founded, and located in Smyrna, TN. They are a local charity whose mission is to celebrate the life of children who have lost a parent while on active duty. Each child sponsored receives a birthday celebration worthy of the honor and sacrifice their family has made for our nation.

When you purchase any blend of Crusader Coffee, not only are you getting locally roasted, fresh coffee, you’re supporting your local economy and a cause worthy of all Americans.

I received this note from Hope for Health:
I’m back this week, and i will have freshly sprouted alfalfa. Try some pumpkin muffins, here just in time for fall! Also, toffee, pecan pralines, and carrot cake cupcakes are available. You won’t find treats like this at the supermarket, or even the bakery! All of my products are near unbeatable in quality, as I am very choosy in what and where I source my ingredients. The products I sell are the same products I carefully make for my family.

(Clockwise from upper left): Sprouted Alfalfa, Healthful Pumpkin Muffins, Gift Boxed New Orleans Style Pecan Pralines, Dark Chocolate Toffee.

In anticipation of cooler weather, I have planted some radishes and onions. Radishes should be ready in the next couple of weeks. Earlier in summer, I planted two small pumpkin patches. With all the rain we are receiving, the pumpkins are growing nicely. I expect to have pie pumpkins available mid October. I will be travelling some, so will be missing some weeks.

Michael Raines of Frontier Family Farm in Altamont has a problem: some empty greenhouse space for which he has no immediate plans. He would like to know what you suggest he grow in this open space this winter. He has some things already started, but has room for more. Please come to market on Thursday and give your suggestions to Michael.

Diana from Cindy’s Suds in Manchester writes:
Years ago, my sister, Cindy, decided to make her own laundry soap because she wasn’t interested in all the “smells and bells” of most commercial laundry detergent. She tried several recipes and found the one she liked the best. She would make it for herself and our parents. My dad started calling it “Cindy Suds” in her honor. Recently, I started to make it using her favorite recipe. Cindy Suds is bottled in clean, reused, half gallon and gallon plastic containers. For more information, please check out Cindy Suds on the market under “Home & Garden Supplies,” send an e-mail to CindyLaundrySuds@gmail.com, or call (931) 570-1240. Trial sizes of Cindy Suds will be available for one dollar at market pick-up this Thursday. Hope to see you there!!

Amy from Solace Farm in Coalmont writes:
I’ve added a shampoo bar, a new formula that I am really loving. I’ve listed a feminine fragrance, with a unisex version coming as soon as it finishes curing. I’ve also added some handmade reusable, recycled shopping bags made from feed sacks. These are super-sturdy and attractive, and they’re in the Household Items under Handmade Items.
