Reminder: Ordering Closes at 10 pm

Manchester Locally Grown market

Our pickup location is across the street from the Manchester City Schools administration building, at

216 East Fort Street, Manchester, TN

If you don’t see a map, click on the address link.

Good morning!

We hope you and your property are all OK after the serious storms early Tuesday morning! Remember: it’s Election Day today! Don’t forget to vote!

This is just a friendly reminder to place your order online by 10 pm this evening. Please don’t forget to order! But if you do forget, give me (Linda) a call in the morning. I will most likely be able to get hold of the farmers and place a late order for you.

Remember to hit that last “submit” button. I really dislike disappointing a customer who comes to market, only to find no order in their name because they didn’t hit the last button. When your order is placed, you will receive an email confirmation. If for any reason you fail to receive this confirmation, please contact Linda as soon as you realize it’s missing.

Also please go to our Facebook page & like, comment, and share this week’s post. Facebook isn’t allowing me to post on multiple sites, or post multiple photos. So please help us spread the word. Surveys indicate that word of mouth is the most effective form of advertisement. Please help us advertise our fantastic growing market!

See you on Thursday!

Blessings,
Michael & Linda

Good morning!

Welcome to this week’s offerings from your online farmers’ market. When you place an order with our farms, you know you are supporting your friends and neighbors, most located within 30 miles of Manchester, Tennessee.

The market will remain open for your orders till Tuesday at 10 pm. Please look around at various categories, since I don’t always notice all the new items to include in the newsletter.

Please be sure to read the section of the page entitled “Important Ordering and Pickup Information.”

Farm News of the Week

Molly from Kountry Vittles writes:

Well Fall has finally started to show its head so I have kicked it in gear by adding four new items to the market. I have added my grandmother’s loved Banana Walnut Bread, an old family Pumpkin Bread, an Apple Bread, and a Tart Cranberry Bread. I hope you will enjoy these as much as my family has over the years.

Please note that each of these special breads is available both with and without nuts, in consideration of those with allergies.

Frontier Family Farms has added another winter vegetable:
Green Leaf Romaine Lettuce.

From Dogwood Valley Greenhouse:
Pre-ordering is now open for our beautiful Christmas wreaths and kissing balls. We will be able to make only a limited number of each (good help is hard to find!), and when they’re gone, they’re gone. Pre-order price will be in effect till Nov 15, so reserve yours now. We will fill orders as received, beginning about Dec 1.

We will also have pink Christmas cacti and several colors of African violets in bloom for Christmas, and you may also reserve those now if you prefer. Just drop me an email to let me know if you want one or more of the potted plants, because they’re not currently available on the market.

We have a winner!

Name That “Bug” contest

Danielle Arnold messaged that the photo in a previous newsletter was of a monarch caterpillar on milkweed.
Congratulations, Danielle!

Molly Cornelison of Kountry Vittles Baked Goods writes:
Fall weather has peeked its head, so now it’s time to introduce a new item. This is my Flavorful Herb Bread. This yeast bread also contains onions, parsley and oregano. It goes great with any pasta dish, soup or stew. Give it a try this week!

Andra Martens of Sow’s Ear Piggery sends this note:
Deer hunters! Do you need pork fat for making your venison sausage? Sow’s Ear Piggery has 4-6-pound packages of pork back fat available. Our heritage breed pigs receive no antibiotics, hormones, or animal by-products. We use this fat for our household cooking oil, which renders almost pure white. USDA inspected. Comes frozen.

Also for sale, we have bratwurst sausages, which are perfect on a cool fall night. Or maybe a pot of chili using ground pork! Have breakfast for dinner with a package of pork breakfast sausage. We also have beautiful belly sides, in two sizes. Check out these and other cuts in the Market pages.

(L to R) top:
Back fat, Bratwurst sausage.
middle:
Whole side (belly), medium breakfast sausage.
bottom:
Ground pork, tenderized pork cutlet.

We’re a bit disappointed that no one seems to know the answer to this riddle. Come on, give it a try. You may know more about insects than you think!

Riddle: What will this caterpillar grow into?
Bonus: What kind of plant is it on?

Farm News of the Week

Amy and Caleb Rae own a unique farm on a reclaimed stripmine in Coalmont, TN, up on the beautiful Monteagle Mountain. Here they have a menagerie including chickens, geese, turkeys, ducks, Scottish Highland cattle, goats, alpacas, sheep, a miniature horse, bees, dogs, and cats. Amy recently posted a couple of photos from her ramblings with her three boys. She writes:
The downside of living on an old coal strip mine is that the soil is almost nonexistent, it’s really just a big, smooth pile of shale rocks and gravel covered with shale-powder masquerading as dirt. The upside is that shale is full of fossils! The boys have an extensive collection, it’s truly about as easy as just picking up the nearest rock to find a leaf-print fossil.

From Dogwood Valley Greenhouse:

The fall reblooming azaleas just keep on blooming at Dogwood Valley Greenhouse, with 4 colors available now. I’m not really sure what the lower nighttime temperatures this week will do to blooms, but I can tell you that these sweet things are winter hardy, and that fall is the very best time to plant these, as well as perennial plants. Fall planting allows roots to develop and grow strong as they soak up the soil moisture while not having to deal with the beating sun of summer. Strong fall root growth means great winter bud set and fabulous spring blooms. So this fall you might add a few of these beautiful reblooming azaleas to your garden, or you might think about a few perennial plants, to get a jump on your beautiful spring garden.

I know it doesn’t feel like fall, but be patient – the cool crisp air will soon be here. The pumpkins are ripening, and with that comes pumpkin rolls and many other delicious pumpkin items. I have seen a few leaves trying to change their colors to display their beautiful hues of red and orange, painting a wondrous scene, making me crave the mouth-watering taste of my grandma’s “Stay Soft Sugar Cookies” decorated up in Buttercream icing and wonderful sugars in the fall colors. My little licensed kitchen has started getting ready for all the treats of fall baked up fresh just for you.
